apparently it’s almost okay to take Showgirls seriously as a piece of obvious satire? I mean I did when it came out, but whatever.
So the premise of It Doesn’t Suck—that Showgirls is a criminally misunderstood masterpiece—depends on our ability to change our minds. If money is any indication... the shift has already taken place. While Showgirls flopped theatrically, those ironic viewings have made the film one of MGM’s top 20 all-time bestsellers, with more than $100 million in home sales. Whether people are laughing at the film or laughing with the film might be irrelevant. People are watching the film. People are thinking about the film. And people are still reading about the film.
